🌿 Kanchanaburi – History, nature & adventure in one
Honestly, Kanchanaburi really shouldn't be underestimated. It's rarely reported on, and on YouTube , people only talk about the hot spots or Isan. Just about three hours from Bangkok (whether by bus, car, or train 🚆), there's a corner of Thailand that truly impressed me. I've been there twice already —and believe me, I'll definitely go back !
Why? Because it has everything : a moving history, wild nature, adventure, quiet moments—and floating hotels! 🛶🏕️

🕊️ A story that gets under your skin
I'm not usually one for guided tours , but Kanchanaburi was just the right fit. The region is steeped in history—and I think people should know what happened there. You might have heard of the famous Bridge over the River Kwai —not a Hollywood fake, but real. And sad. 😔 During World War II, thousands of prisoners of war were forced to build the so-called Death Railway —right through the jungle— under inhumane conditions . Many lost their lives in the process.
💡 There's a section of railway line that's still in use today—so you can spend a few minutes wandering through this part of history yourself. I think it's good to engage with history, but I'm not a big fan of turning it into a tourist attraction. A visit to a war cemetery is... yes, not easy, but important. When you read the names and realize that 95% of the dead were only 20 years old, you realize the tragedy of the story.

🌴 Pure nature – and like something out of an old adventure film
Okay, history is one thing—but the region's nature is truly amazing! 🌄Kanchanaburi is green, tropical, wild, and in places almost like something from another time.
My tip: Erawan Waterfalls ! 💦 They're located in the national park of the same name , and you can climb up the several levels, swim, slide, or simply marvel at the scenery. Turquoise water, a jungle feel, and the little fish that give you a free foot scrub – simply amazing. River cruises on the River Kwai are also absolutely worth it. Best in the early morning or just before sunset – it's nice and quiet, the monkeys climb through the trees, and the landscape slowly passes by.
And then, of course: taking the train! 🚂 The route may be short, but it's spectacular. You chug slowly over wooden bridges along rock faces, with a view of the green nowhere. Honestly, it's one of those moments when you forget about Instagram and just be there.
🛏️ Spend the night on the water – or in the middle of the jungle
You can also spend some pretty unusual nights in Kanchanaburi . I've already slept in a hotel on the river —yes, on the water! It rocks gently, and there are several resorts like that to choose from. The river gently rushes, and you wake up with a view of the greenery. 🌊🛶 I've already stayed in a tented camp in the middle of nature twice. It looked like something out of an Indiana Jones movie, only with air conditioning 😄. You can sit by the campfire in the evening, gaze at the stars, listen to crickets chirping... amazing! ✨🔥 For me, it's like a different side of Thailand, offering variety and adventure. 💪😄
The Float House River Kwai
Resort Review:
An experience on the river 🛶🌿 with good food 🍜 The region has many unique accommodations in different price categories.
🌊 The Float House River Kwai – Sleep on the water & thunder over the jungle
Honestly, the Float House River Kwai was one of those experiences you'll never forget. Not because anything totally crazy happened—although... actually, it did. 😅 But let's start from the beginning.

🛶 Arrive & be amazed
Even the journey there is a little adventure: You're taken by boat across the river – no road, no noise, just water, jungle, and peace. And then suddenly these floating wooden bungalows appear , amidst the greenery.
Each bungalow is private, with a terrace directly over the water. I sat there for a moment, feet in the river, a cold Singha beer in my hand, and thought: Okay, this isn't bad. 🍺🌴

🛏️ Bungalow/Room
When we moved into the room, we were very surprised because it looked really impressive, even though it looked very inconspicuous from the outside.

🌩️ The “bonus experience” at night
Then, in the middle of the night, the bombshell came. Literally. I was woken up by a thunderstorm that would put any home theater to shame. Lightning, thunder, wind—the whole package. I lay there in bed, heard the water gurgling beneath me, and thought: I hope this bungalow stays where it is. 😅
But hey – everything stayed calm, nothing drifted away, and in the morning everything was peaceful again. Still, that was the most violent thunderstorm of my life . And somehow that made the stay even more special.
🍛 Eat, relax, enjoy
The hotel restaurant is located between the bungalows on a large platform—also above the water . It's very cozy, with a view of the natural surroundings. And: the food was really good! Not fine dining, but delicious Thai cuisine, freshly prepared. I enjoyed eating there every evening—you don't want to keep getting on the boat just for a meal. 😄
🛶 Activities and things to do
There are countless options; I visited the village of a gas worker from nearby Myanmar who worked at the hotel. Swimming in the river, boat tours, etc. There's something for everyone.

🧘♂️ Who is this for?
If you want to truly unwind —without car noise, without pool parties—but with nature, water, and jungle sounds, then this is exactly what you need.
I'd say: romantic, quiet, relaxed , but also something for adventurers who don't want to fly in at night during a thunderstorm. 😜
🔚 Conclusion
The Float House River Kwai was a real highlight for me. A place where you put your phone aside, take a deep breath, and let the river flow. And if a tropical thunderstorm comes along, well, then it's unforgettable. It's precisely experiences like these that make your stay unforgettable, and when you get back home and a thunderstorm comes along, the memories flood back. I would definitely do it again. Just maybe this time with earplugs and a small rope attached to the bungalow—just in case. 😂🌀🏞️
Hintok River Camp
Resort Review:
Camping right by the river with a natural pool 🛶🌿 Simple, good food 🍜 and a campfire with a grill in the evening . Very beautiful in nature and close to the nearby villages.

🏕️ Hintok River Camp – Luxury, nature & a bit of magic in the morning
So if you're ever in Kanchanaburi and fancy some nature—but not sleeping mats and canned food—then you have to check out Hintok River Camp . I've been there twice for two nights , and each time I thought:
Yes, that's exactly what a really good place should feel like.

🛖 Camping? Well… more like glamping deluxe
Forget everything you understand by "camping." No damp tents, no tired air mattresses. Hintok Camp is more like an open-air resort with permanently installed luxury tents – with a real bed, bathroom, wooden deck, and a view of the greenery. It's not just a lamp hanging there, it's style. 😄
The atmosphere is incredibly pleasant —open, quiet, and relaxed. You can hear the rushing river, the crickets chirp in the evenings, and you get that feeling of being in nature—but without sacrificing comfort .

🌊 Right on the river & full of possibilities
The camp is located directly on the River Kwai , so you can easily go on river excursions —paddling, swimming, chilling, or floating. And if you prefer to stay on dry land, there are free bicycles for exploring the area, as well as a small natural pool with a view of the river.
The surrounding area is full of exciting spots—history, nature, small temples, bridges, markets. Everything feels authentic . No mass tourism, no fake Instagram spots—just real, tranquil Thailand.
🌅 My insider tip for the sunrise
If you really want to experience something special , do this:
🕓 Get up early! Before sunrise. 🚲 Grab a bike from the camp. ➡️ Ride out of the camp, take the road to the right, about 1 km. ➡️ When the road ends, turn right again – after 200 m you'll see the river with a suspension bridge . If you ride over there in the morning , you'll see a small temple on the hill on the other side. And then it happens: The sun slowly rises, a light mist drifts over the river , children cross the bridge to school. It's quiet, peaceful, and you're right in the middle of it all. I'm telling you: It's like an old Thai film – a moment that briefly takes you completely away from everything. No cell phone, no stress, just pure ambiance . It really touched me. 🧘♂️🌄

🧳 My conclusion
For me, Hintok River Camp is the perfect mix : nature without sacrifice, adventure without chaos, relaxation without boredom. You're in the middle of the countryside, but you sleep like a king – and if you do it right, you'll wake up in the morning with a piece of authentic Thailand that you rarely get to see.
Would I go again? Already booked—almost. 😎
✅ Tips
🌤️ A few more tips from me
Hot & humid : Yes, it can be. It's especially hot between March and May. It's better to travel between November and February , when the climate is more pleasant.
Getting there : From Bangkok it is easy to get there by bus, car or train – the latter is slow but absolutely charming.
Duration : I'd plan at least 3-4 full days . Believe me – there's a lot to see and experience.
I usually stay in two hotels for two or three days. It's a nice change of pace and you get to experience a lot. 😄
My conclusion: Kanchanaburi is more than just a day trip 🚀
If you want to experience history, but also enjoy nature, adventure, and a bit of isolation— go for it! Whether you want to sleep on the river, explore the waterfalls, or simply chill in a hammock— Kanchanaburi has a little bit of everything. And it sticks with you.
I've been there twice – and I already know it won't be the last time. ✌️
